Ethernet

On this week we learned Chapter 5 called Ethernet. Ethernet is LAN technology that connects computers together. First Ethernet technology was published and sold in 1980 by consortium of Digital Equipment Corporation, Intel and Xerox. Then open standards were created for everyone, such that every user could benefit. Then, in 1985 The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standards for Local and Metropolian Networks published for LANs. The number of this standards is 802 and Ethernet is 802.3.
Ethernet works with Data Link and Physical layers. It supports data bandwidth from 10Mb/s to 100Gb/s. It operates on two layers of Data Link layer: Logical Link Control (LLC) and MAC layer. LLC is used to communicate with upper layers, and add control Information to packet to deliver it to lower layers. It is independent of hardware, because is implemented on software. MAC sublayer works directly with hardware and is responsible for data encapsulation. It adds necessary delimeters, assembles and reassembles data and checks trailer for errors. Second function is Media Access Control, means that it places frames on media and removes it.
Ethernet consists of premable, Start Fame delimeter, Destination MAC address and Source MAC addresses, Ether Type, Data and Frame Check Sequence Fields. And totally size of frame should be between 64 and 1518 bytes.
Finally, Ethernet is the most widely used LAN technology today. And this was short preview to the topic.Next week we will have midterm according to all previous topics. In this 7 weeks I new a lot of new, understood basics of computer networks abd and tried to be active and execute all given tasks to me. This course is full of information to read and tasks to do, so I think it is going to involve me more.
